I admit that I was skeptical as I walked into Tomorrowland in Disneyland Park. As a yearly attendee to the now retired Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios, there is nothing in my mind that could replace it. But I told myself that I am, after all, a Star Wars fan first; and so, I stepped over the line into the world of Season of the Force, and here is what I found.
1. Star Wars Launch Bay
Star Wars Launch Bay is packed full of Star Wars movie props and memorabilia. It was pretty neat to see costumes, light sabers and blasters up close and to browse at all the exclusive merchandise.
But, the main attraction of the Launch Bay were the Meet and Greets! Darth Vader or Kylo Ren and Chewbacca were on opposite ends of the Bay and were there continuously throughout the day. Boba Fett could show up at any moment, but was not a regular, which was a disappointment.
I must admit, getting to see Chewie any time, on any day is a big plus since he was a must see for me at Star Wars Weekends.
Overall, I would rate the Launch Bay as a Star Wars Museum that would be enjoyable for the whole family: a place that you could roam and take your time to enjoy.
2. Path of the Jedi
The Path of the Jedi is a short film that is shown in the Tomorrowland Theater. It was a moving film about the struggles of Anakin, Luke and other Jedi as they grew to find themselves in the light or darkness of the Force. It was a great movie for those of us who love the nostalgia, romance and struggles of the sagas.
3. Star Tours: The Adventure Continues
The big change in this favorite fan ride is the beginning sequence where you are flown into Jakku and are greeted by Finn and the Millennium Falcom. You run into First Order TIE Fighters, scavengers from Jakku, and are visited by a holographic transmission from BB-8 to encourage you to protect the Rebel Spy. From that point, the ride returns to the randomized trips to the familiar Star Tours planets.
It was fun to visit Jakku, however, it really doesn't fit in with the original story line of the ride: it seemed out of place. However, it is still a lot of fun and a favorite of mine. I expect they will work on a completely new version for Star Wars Land.
4. Hyperspace Mountain
Hyperspace Mountain, formerly Space Mountain, is a new, exciting experience as you join an elite X-Wing Squadron and are thrust into battle. The ride is a lot darker and with the music and battle scenes, the twists and turns build an excitement that far exceeds Space Mountain.
All the fans I talked to love it and thought it was the best part of Season of the Force.
5. Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple
Jedi Training at Disneyland finally catches up with its counterpart at Hollywood Studios with all new female Jedi fighting the Dark Side. Jedi Training is still takes place in the center stage of Tomorrowland and requires your younglings to sign up before hand. There is a limited number each day, and to sign up you must be accompanied by your parent or guardian, be 4 to 12 years of age, be able to follow instructions, not afraid to be on stage and not afraid to fight the Dark Side.
Although new villains are supposed to be apart of the show, during the weekend that I attended, we only had Darth Vader.
Overall, Season of the Force was a lot of fun, as I always love being surrounded by Star Wars Memorabilia and other Star Wars Fans! However, it lacks the excitement and character interactions that Star Wars Weekends gave us, and they do not serve Darth Vader Cupcakes!
I do feel as though this is a placeholder: a way to keep fans engaged in Star Wars in the parks while the construction of Star Wars Land is underway.
Meanwhile, I'm first in line for the new Star Wars Land at Disneyland!
See you there!
